# Maternity Care at Sutter Recognized for Quality

U.S. News and CMQCC honor multiple Sutter hospitals for high-quality maternity care, supporting over 26,000 births across Sutter's network each year.

Choosing where to welcome a new life is one of the most important decisions expectant parents make. In a time filled with anticipation and emotion, the last thing they should worry about is the quality of care they will receive at the hospital they choose. That’s why recognition for maternity care services at Sutter hospitals is more than an accolade — it’s peace of mind for patients.

**Women’s Health and Maternity Care at Sutter**

As one of California’s leading maternity care providers, over 26,000 babies are delivered throughout Sutter’s network of hospitals annually. This is made possible by a collaborative team of obstetricians, midwives and maternal-fetal specialists focused on providing patients with elite, high-quality and tailored birth experiences.

With over 400 dedicated care team members, Sutter is advancing the future of women’s care, providing innovative, personalized and data-driven care that supports women no matter their age or where they live.

**Best Hospitals for Maternity Care 2026**

Based on 2024 data via a nationwide survey, hospitals self-reporting, and validation from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, _U.S. News & World Report_ recognized 495 hospitals (55% of all hospitals eligible for potential honors) for offering high-quality maternity services.

Sutter’s “High Performing” hospitals:

-   Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Alta Bates Campus
-   Sutter’s CPMC – Van Ness Campus
-   Sutter’s Eden Medical Center
-   Sutter Lakeside Hospital
-   Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento
-   Sutter’s Mills-Peninsula Medical Center
-   Sutter Roseville Medical Center
-   Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital
-   Sutter Tracy Community Hospital

Additionally, _U.S. News_ again designated Sutter Lakeside a Maternity Care Access Hospital, underscoring its presence being crucial to the community. To earn this designation, hospitals must not only meet “High Performing” quality standards but also satisfy one of these conditions: they are the sole provider of maternity care in their county where there are fewer than 60 obstetric providers per 1,000 births, or they are the only facility within a 15-mile radius offering maternity care in a county with fewer than 134 obstetric providers per 10,000 births.

**2025 California Maternity Care Honor Roll**

Approximately [420,000 babies](https://calhospitalcompare.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Fact-Sheet-w-List-of-Honor-Roll-Hospitals_Maternity-Honor-Roll_CHC_2025.pdf) are born in California each year, with childbirth the number one reason for hospitalization in the state and across the nation.

Eden Medical Center, Sutter Lakeside and Sutter Tracy achieved “Superior Performance” from California Health and Human Services Agency and Cal Hospital Compare for meeting or exceeding standards for performance across all five maternal health metrics.

The five key metrics the organizations look at when recognizing hospitals on the Maternity Care Honor Roll include:

-   NTSV C-section rates, or Nulliparous, Term, Singleton, Vertex C-section rates
-   Numbers of infections at surgical sites after C-sections
-   Rates of Vaginal Birth After C-section, also known as a VBAC
-   Episiotomy
-   Rates of early elective deliveries before 39 weeks

Sutter Amador Hospital and Sutter Davis Hospital were also recognized on the Honor Roll for meeting or exceeding California’s Healthy People 2030 NTSV C-section target rate of 23.6%.
