# COVID Vaccines Appear Safe for Pregnant Moms

A CDC study of 35,000 pregnant women found no greater risk of complications after COVID-19 vaccination, offering reassurance to expecting mothers, says Sutter.

A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [study](https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMoa2104983?articleTools=true), published in the [New England Journal of Medicine](https://www.nejm.org/), indicates that Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines appear to be safe for pregnant women.

CDC researchers tracked the health of more than 35,000 pregnant women after they were vaccinated between December 2020 and late February. Preliminary data from the study indicate those who were vaccinated did not appear to have any greater risk of pregnancy complications.

William Isenberg, M.D., chief quality and safety officer for Sutter Health, said in an interview with KTVU the CDC study findings, “are very encouraging and give me more confidence in talking to patients and saying, you know, women who never even had this vaccine have about the same stillbirth rate, the same miscarriage rate, the same likelihood of having a low birth rate.”
