NOVATO, Calif. – Not-for-profit health system Sutter Health is expanding specialty and cancer care services at Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital campus, adding new multispecialty clinics, vascular services and cancer treatment options for patients across Marin and Southern Sonoma counties.
The expansion reflects Sutter’s continued investment in North Marin, where demand for specialty and chronic disease care continues to grow. More than one-quarter of Marin County residents are age 65 or older, increasing the need for accessible specialty services close to home.
The effort brings together physicians from Sutter Medical Group of the Redwoods and Sutter West Bay Medical Group, expanding collaboration across Marin, San Francisco and the North Bay.
“This is about more than a new space,” said Christina Oh, president of Sutter’s Greater San Francisco and East Bay Division. “It’s about expanding access to expert specialty care and making that care easier to navigate close to home. Together, we’re creating a stronger foundation for the future of healthcare in the North Bay and establishing this campus as a regional destination for coordinated specialty care.”
New Multispecialty Clinic Opens Across from Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital
The centerpiece of the expansion is a new 21,511-square-foot multispecialty outpatient clinic at 165 Rowland Way (Suites 207, 211, 212), directly across from Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital. The clinic includes 27 exam rooms and offers care in cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, oncology, podiatry, urology and general surgery, with additional specialties expected to open later this year.
Located on the hospital campus, the Novato Campus Multispecialty Clinics integrate outpatient specialty care with hospital-based services, creating a more connected experience for patients and referring physicians.
“The strength of Sutter is our ability to bring together exceptional physicians, advanced services and a coordinated system of care,” said Dr. Michael Magnotti, an endocrinologist and president and CEO of Sutter Medical Group of the Redwoods. “This expansion brings that model to life in Novato, creating more opportunities for collaboration among care teams and a more seamless experience for patients across the North Bay.”
Physicians practicing at the clinic include cardiologists Dr. Michael Johl and Dr. Jonathan Peng, endocrinologist Dr. Kendal Hamann, neurologist Dr. Richard Mendius, oncologist Dr. Sorbarikor Piawah, podiatrists Dr. Craig Krcal and Dr. Yuxi Guan, and urologist Dr. Matthew Johnson. General surgeon Dr. Leslie Browder and gastroenterologist Dr. Farah Shirazi are expected to begin seeing patients this fall.
Dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Freeman sees patients nearby at 5800 Nave Drive.
Additional specialties including orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pulmonology, rheumatology and primary care, are expected to be added through 2027 as Sutter continues to expand services in Novato.
Advanced Vascular Care Now Available in Novato
Sutter has also expanded vascular services at its Novato campus, allowing more patients to receive specialized care locally.
Vascular surgeon Dr. Hernan Bazan recently joined the Novato team, providing minimally invasive treatment for conditions including aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease and carotid artery disease. An on-site vascular laboratory allows patients to complete imaging and evaluation in one visit.
Previously, some patients traveled outside Marin County for portions of their vascular care. Bringing these services to Novato expands access to specialized treatment while keeping patients closer to home.
Cancer Care Expands at Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital
Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital at 180 Rowland Way has also expanded its outpatient infusion program to include cancer treatment, allowing more patients to receive care locally.
For patients undergoing cancer treatment, which often requires frequent visits over weeks or months, having services available in the community can reduce travel and help patients remain connected to their families, caregivers and support systems throughout treatment.
Medical oncologist Dr. Sorbarikor Piawah is helping lead the expansion of cancer services in Novato.
The hospital, which opened in 2001 and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, continues to expand the services available on campus as part of Sutter’s commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of North Marin communities.
Building a Destination for Specialty Care in North Marin
Together, these investments position Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital campus as an important destination for specialty care in the North Bay, serving patients across Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties.
“Novato is becoming our North Bay hub for subspecialty care,” said Dr. Chris Woods, a cardiac electrophysiologist and interim chief medical officer for Sutter West Bay Medical Group. “Patients can receive expert evaluation and ongoing care here, while staying connected to the full capabilities of our system when more advanced care is needed.”
Patients who require advanced procedures can access specialized services across Sutter’s broader system, including Sutter’s CPMC in San Francisco and Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital, then return to Novato for follow-up care closer to home.
Sutter expects to continue growing its Novato presence in the years ahead, adding physicians and services while building on the campus’s role as a destination for specialty and outpatient care in North Marin.
Sutter Health leaders and community representatives, including Marin County Supervisor Eric Lucan and representatives from the office of Assemblymember Damon Connolly, joined clinicians and staff to celebrate the expansion at a ribbon-cutting event.
