Sutter hospitals consistently achieve some of the lowest cesarean section (C-section) rates in California.  This week, 12 Sutter hospitals were recognized by the California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS), in partnership with Cal Hospital Compare, for their success in reducing cesarean births among first-time moms with low-risk pregnancies. Four Sutter hospitals also earned statewide honors for patient safety. The 2023 Maternity Care and Patient Safety Honor Rolls are part of a series of quality recognitions from the state.

“Sutter has developed and implemented many programs over the years to improve the care of mothers and babies through pregnancy, labor and delivery. Additionally, our care teams stay laser focused on improving patient safety for all our patients across Sutter Health every day,” said William Isenberg, M.D., Ph.D., Sutter’s chief medical and quality officer. “We’re proud to be recognized on these statewide honor rolls, which acknowledge our efforts for providing safe, equitable, high-quality care for the patients and communities we serve.”

2023 Maternity Honor Roll Hospitals

Not-for-profit Sutter Health has 12 hospital campuses recognized in the 2023 Maternity Honor Roll—five of which have been part of honor roll for eight consecutive years. Sutter hospitals honored, include:

  • Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Alta Bates Campus | Honor Roll Recipient Eight Consecutive Years
  • Sutter’s California Pacific Medical Center – Van Ness Campus
  • Sutter’s Eden Medical Center | Honor Roll Recipient Eight Consecutive Years
  • Sutter’s Memorial Medical Center
  • Sutter Coast Hospital
  • Sutter Davis Hospital | Honor Roll Recipient Eight Consecutive Years
  • Sutter Delta Medical Center
  • Sutter Lakeside Hospital | Honor Roll Recipient Eight Consecutive Years
  • Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento | Honor Roll Recipient Eight Consecutive Years
  • Sutter Roseville Medical Center
  • Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital
  • Sutter Tracy Community Hospital

For some mothers, C-sections can be the safest or only way to deliver a healthy newborn, but some patients undergo the surgery for no medical reason. These medically unnecessary procedures can expose both parent and baby to potentially avoidable risks. The Maternity Care Honor Roll acknowledges hospitals that have achieved—and in many cases have gone beyond—the U.S. Department of Health’s Healthy People 2030 goals to reduce national nulliparous term singleton vertex (NTSV) C-section rates down to 23.6 percent. The Sutter Health system NTSV C-section rate for a rolling 12 months ending June 2023 was 22 percent.

The 107 hospitals on the Maternity Honor Roll represent half of all 211 California hospitals that offer maternity services and participate in the California Maternal Quality Care Collaboratives’ Maternal Data Center.

2023 Patient Safety Honor Roll Hospitals

Additionally, four Sutter hospitals were named to the 2023 Patient Safety Honor Roll for providing patients with safe care across dozens of measures. The honor roll recognized 82 of the state’s 347 adult, acute care hospitals. Sutter hospitals honored include:

  • Sutter Amador Hospital
  • Sutter Coast Hospital
  • Sutter Lakeside Hospital
  • Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital

The Patient Safety Honor Roll uses objective, publicly available patient safety measures to evaluate hospitals across a variety of domains including hospital acquired infections, adverse patient safety events, sepsis management, patient experience and Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade.

“Improving the quality of patient care in hospitals is an ongoing process,” said CalHHS Secretary Mark Ghaly, M.D., MPH, in a press release. “These annual measurements through Cal Hospital Compare help us to applaud those hospitals doing excellent work and show where improvement is needed.”

Cal Hospital Compare is an independent, non-profit organization that rates California hospitals and focuses on quality and performance information to help consumers make informed medical decisions and improve the healthcare system.
