Center combines breast and pelvic health, cancer support services and women’s health resource center, into one convenient hub

SAN FRANCISCO (Jan. 26, 2021) – California Pacific Medical Center’s brand-new CPMC Center for Women’s Health Care announced its opening today, marking a significant milestone in the medical center’s 150-year tradition of providing specialized care for women. Located at CPMC’s Pacific Heights Outpatient Campus, the new 16,500-square-foot center integrates CPMC’s existing Breast Health Center, Women’s Health Resource Center, and Pelvic Health Program, in one beautiful and modern space. The center will serve approximately 50,000 women each year and is outfitted with state-of-the-art screening and diagnostic technology, including 3D mammography, the most accurate form of mammography available. CPMC is part of the Sutter Health not-for-profit integrated network of care.

“At CPMC, we recognize the need for comprehensive and personalized services when it comes to women’s health,” says Margo Cusack, director of imaging and women’s services at CPMC. “This new center helps deliver on our commitment to provide world-class care in a convenient and comfortable setting that allows our patients to heal, maintain their wellness, and learn about their health for the short and long term.”

3D mammography uses X-rays to produce images of breast tissue in order to detect lumps, tumors or other abnormalities.

A Whole Woman Approach

The CPMC Center for Women’s Health Care integrates three specialty health programs:

CPMC’s nationally accredited Breast Health Center (BHC) provides imaging, exams and procedures—more than 45,000 each year. Within the BHC, the Notkin Family Breast Cancer Recovery Program, has served more than 34,000 women since 2004, including an average of 475-500 woman annually for breast cancer. Some services include nurse navigation, survivorship planning, psychosocial support groups and more. The new center will improve efficiency with seven breast tomosynthesis machines for 3D mammography, breast ultrasounds and minimally invasive breast biopsy.

CPMC’s Pelvic Health Clinic is a leader in treating and supporting women with urinary incontinence using biofeedback and education. It’s Ovarian and Reproductive Cancer Recovery Program, developed in 1998 and supported by philanthropy, has served women with gynecological cancers in the Bay Area regardless of their health insurance status or hospital affiliation. CPMC is an accredited Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Gynecology by the Surgical Review Corporation. Additionally, the medical center’s cancer avatar project recently discovered a potential new therapy for ovarian cancer patients as part of its research into ovarian and other cancers.

Women’s Health Resource Center (WHRC), handling nearly 15,000 patient interactions a year, provides high-touch care for women during gynecological cancer treatment and rehabilitation. A nurse practitioner provides education and support while visiting women with ovarian and reproductive cancers at their bedsides, infusion centers or hospices. Additional services include psychosocial counseling, massage, nutrition advice, acupuncture, yoga, and a wig boutique to manage hair loss due to chemotherapy. The WHRC also provides care for women coping with conditions such as cancer, depression, arthritis, menopause and more, with a goal of enabling women of all ages, ethnic groups, socio-economic backgrounds, gender identities, and sexual orientations to take the very best care of themselves.
