Sutter Health has been named to Newsweek’s 2024 list of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity. The magazine examined publicly available data, held interviews, and conducted an anonymous survey of 220,000+ employees at companies across the country to identify those “recognized by their employees for genuinely respecting and valuing individuals from different walks of life.”

“There’s a reason that inclusion takes center stage as one of our core values at Sutter Health: It’s key to who we are and who we want to be as an organization,” said President and CEO Warner Thomas. “This is as much a personal passion of mine as it is integral to our organizational strategy to be the best place to work and receive care—for everyone, every day.”

Sutter has five well-established systemwide resource groups representing disabled, veteran, multicultural, women and LGBTQ+ employees and allies. Across the Sutter network, employees and clinicians at many care sites have inclusion groups leading local efforts. There is also an enterprise-level Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Council and local DEI Councils for physicians, clinicians and leaders. Sutter has also invested in programs designed to widen the pipeline for executive leadership and resident physicians, in addition to reviewing the hiring, training and development of staff to enable all to grow their careers and also attract and hire more diverse candidates.

“One of the first things I learned about Sutter Health is how deeply and broadly the commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion runs in this organization,” said Dana Beckton, who became Sutter Health’s first Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer in January of this year. “It’s important to see that employees have gotten the same impression, and more important still to know that we will be working together to accelerate and strengthen these efforts for our people, our culture and our communities.”

The organization has developed a systemwide, holistic and comprehensive plan that embeds DEI at the heart of its work. The plan focuses on internal efforts and on Sutter’s impact in the broader community. These endeavors are in addition to Sutter’s nationally recognized health equity work conducting research and developing tools to improve care for one of the most diverse patient populations in the country.

“Diversity is a widely discussed topic—and it remains a crucial factor as people look for an employer or a business partner,” said Nancy Cooper, Newsweek’s global editor-in-chief. “Newsweek and market-data research firm Plant-A Insights are proud to introduce ‘America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity 2024,’ highlighting companies that are committed to offering diverse and inclusive work environments.”
