NORTHERN CALIF. – Matthew Solomon, M.D., Ph.D., joined Sutter Health as its first chief scientific officer on Jan. 21. In this new role, Dr. Solomon will use his nationally renowned expertise in data-driven clinical and research programs to further the health system’s research efforts and advance its quality, medical education and scientific initiatives that drive a new level of clinical excellence across system service lines.

This experience, paired with his passion for learning and curiosity for continual innovation in care delivery, will strengthen our clinical and research teams, helping make Sutter an even more attractive place to practice medicine, conduct research, learn and receive care,” said Conrad Vial, M.D., president of Sutter Health Network.
Dr. Solomon is an internationally recognized cardiologist and scientist with more 12 years’ experience in leadership roles. He has been instrumental in developing programs that enhance research methodologies, identify and share best practices, and leverage data and analytics to conduct research that supports clinical care. This work includes the application of AI/machine learning for better diagnostic decision-making in clinical settings and predictive modeling to develop proactive population health programs that bring leading-edge care to tens of thousands of patients. Dr. Solomon most recently served as one of Kaiser Permanente’s premiere physician-scientists and a key operational leader who used data-driven analytics to support and guide clinical operations.
In addition to working closely alongside Sutter Health research and medical education leaders, Dr. Solomon will collaborate with other executives and physician leaders across the system in digital health, innovation, health equity, population health and clinical service lines. He will maintain a clinical practice at Sutter’s California Pacific Medical Center with plans to develop a system-wide, comprehensive care program for patients with aortic disease, an area in which he is internationally known.
“I am humbled and excited by the opportunity to guide research and help integrate physician- and investigator-led analytic support for clinical operations at Sutter Health,” said Dr. Solomon. “I believe Sutter will become a destination center for translational, patient-centered and health systems research, where knowledge is shared and scaled to improve patient care and community health. My goal is to develop a culture of inquiry and to support the development of research and analytics pathways that support Sutter’s system-wide goals and improve the health of our patients.”
Dr. Solomon received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine, and his doctoral degree in health policy and health economics from RAND through the UCLA medical scientist training program. He completed an internal medicine residency and a cardiovascular medicine fellowship at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He also holds board certifications in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine.
