Sutter Hospitals Named Among the Best in the Nation for Patient Safety

NORTHERN CALIF. – Seven hospital campuses in Sutter Health’s not-for-profit system earned national recognition today as a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, an online resource that provides consumers with information about physicians and hospitals.

This achievement, announced during National Patient Safety Awareness Week, reflects the clear commitment to safe, patient-centered care and puts these Sutter hospitals among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient safety.

Sutter hospital campuses awarded Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence Awards for 2025, include:

  • Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Alta Bates Campus
  • Sutter’s California Pacific Medical Center – Mission Bernal Campus
  • Sutter’s California Pacific Medical Center – Davies Campus
  • Sutter’s Mills-Peninsula Medical Center
  • Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital
  • Sutter Roseville Medical Center
  • Sutter Solano Medical Center

“This impressive award from Healthgrades reflects Sutter’s unwavering focus on providing the highest standards of safety and quality to the more than 3.5 million patients we are honored to care for,” said William Isenberg, M.D., Sutter Health vice president and chief clinical and quality officer. “I’m proud of our performance and the commitment of our dedicated care teams who work hard each day to demonstrate how they prioritize patient safety, accessible care and clinical excellence.”

To determine the 2025 top-performing hospitals for patient safety, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The Patient Safety Excellence Award honors hospitals that have had the lowest occurrences of 14 preventable patient safety events.

“As a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient, these Sutter hospitals consistently put the well-being of their patients and staff at the forefront, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Debra Gradick, MD FACEP, senior physician consultant at Healthgrades. “We commend these seven hospitals for providing consistently exceptional care while preventing serious injuries, giving patients their best chance of a seamless recovery.”

Commitment to Safety

As a high-reliability organization, Sutter promotes a culture of safety in which everyone is empowered to speak up about potential safety concerns. Efforts around this work include:

  • The launch of Sutter Safe Care in 2018. The program kicked off Sutter’s journey to becoming a high-reliability organization, with comprehensive training of over 65,000 leaders, physicians, advance practice clinicians and staff.
  • Targeted training to onboard new leaders, employees and physicians, to ensure everyone adopts Sutter Safe Care’s high-reliability behaviors and key practices.
  • A reliability coach program that empowers frontline staff to support their peers with high-reliability behaviors. Currently, there are over 1,100 frontline reliability coaches across Sutter, and participation in the program continues to grow, year over year
