Sutter’s Advanced Neuroscience Service Line earns a spot on Becker’s Hospital Review’s list of 2025 “100 Great Neuro and Spine Programs”
One in two Americans – more than half the U.S. population – lives with a neurological disease or disorder, according to a recent national analysis. These conditions, ranging from migraines and stroke to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, can alter memory, mobility, speech and even personality. They affect how we move, think and feel, often significantly impacting daily life for patients and their families.
Recognizing the profound impact of these illnesses, Sutter Health’s Advanced Neuroscience Service Line has earned a place on Becker’s Hospital Review’s list of “100 Great Neuro and Spine Programs” for 2025, affirming its dedication to providing premier, innovative care for patients across Northern California.
“The distinction reflects Sutter’s integrated approach to treating brain and nervous system conditions, combining cutting-edge technology, clinical excellence and research to provide patients specialized care close to home,” said Dr. Shawn Kile, chair of Sutter’s Advanced Neuroscience Service Line. “By uniting advanced technology with a team-based approach—from stroke treatment and epilepsy management to complex neurosurgery—we deliver timely, innovative solutions that truly make a difference in patients’ lives.
Comprehensive Care Across Northern California
Sutter’s Advanced Neuroscience Service Line delivers coordinated, high-quality care through a broad system of clinicians and programs:
- More than 6,000 patients receive stroke care annually at 17 certified stroke centers, with 24 hospitals providing 24/7 emergency neurological services.
- In 2024, 16 stroke centers earned Gold Plus awards from the American Heart Association, including 10 at the Elite Plus level.
- Sutter operates three certified epilepsy centers and two memory clinics, including the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center.
- The system includes a Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence and the Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Center, an ALS Center of Excellence.
- More than 110 neurologists and 40 neurosurgeons provide advanced care, supported by seven sleep centers and accredited rehabilitation programs, with CPMC ranked No. 1 in California by Newsweek.
Research and Innovations That Drive Better Outcomes
Sutter turns research into real-world innovations that improve speed, precision and access to neurologic care:
- Patients have access to 45+ clinical trials, including Alzheimer’s therapies; Sutter has safely administered lecanemab and donanemab to more than 600 patients since 2023.
- AI-powered imaging accelerates stroke detection and triage, reducing delays and improving coordination.
- One of Northern California’s largest telestroke programs and one of the nation’s only Mobile Stroke Units deliver critical, timely care; BEST-MSU research shows patients treated in the unit are 10 times more likely to receive care within the first hour.
- Teleneurology expands coverage at hospitals with limited neurology services, and a virtual EEG Reading Panel broadens access to advanced brain monitoring.
- Outpatient EEG headsets in rural and urban areas, smartphone-based cognitive screening and a Sutter-codeveloped Apple Watch app support earlier detection and personalized treatment.
- Minimally invasive and noninvasive options include laser therapy for epilepsy and brain tumors, robotic imaging for precision surgery, focused ultrasound for movement disorders and vagus nerve stimulation to restore mobility after stroke.
Invested in the Future of Advanced Neurologic Care
Sutter continues to make bold investments to expand access, sustain innovation and train the next generation of neurologic specialists:
- A $442 million advanced neurosciences complex in San Francisco, opening in 2028, will serve as a hub for multidisciplinary care and research.
- The Ray Dolby Brain Health Center is adding a second location at CPMC’s Davies Campus to increase capacity for Alzheimer’s and memory care.
- A neurology residency program at Sutter Roseville Medical Center will train future specialists and strengthen access across Sacramento and the Central Valley.
