When patients need specialty care, quality matters. So does access.
Healthgrades’ 2027 Specialty Excellence Awards recognize Sutter hospitals across orthopedic, emergency, heart, stroke, pulmonary, digestive, vascular, prostate, critical and surgical care. This includes 23 more honors across the system than in 2026.
The specialty awards cover different conditions and procedures, but the patient’s need behind them is often the same: finding the right care at the right time in the right place, closer to home.
“These recognitions reflect the strength of a connected, integrated system working on behalf of patients,” said Dr. William Isenberg, chief medical and quality officer at Sutter Health. “No matter where they enter our system, patients should be able to count on high-quality specialty care. The honors are a testament to the work of our teams across Sutter to share expertise, coordinate care and continuously improve outcomes for the people and communities we serve.”

Exceptional Care, Regardless of Location
Delivering consistently excellent specialty care across a large integrated network with locations in communities with their own unique needs requires more than individual areas of expertise.
Some of the ways Sutter is meeting patients where they are for what they need include:
- Physician-led service lines for consistent care. This model connects teams across specialties, locations and medical groups so they can share evidence-based best practices, coordinate care and continually improve quality. This allows patients to experience the same high-quality care wherever they enter Sutter’s doors.
- Continued investments in access. Sutter is investing nearly $1 billion in ambulatory expansion, with plans for 112 new care sites by 2030, while shifting appropriate care into more convenient settings and preserving hospital capacity for patients with higher acuity needs.
- Building the workforce for growth. More than 350 physician faculty teach nearly 486 residents and fellows across Sutter’s 32 accredited Graduate Medical Education programs. By 2030, Sutter expects those numbers to grow to nearly 784 trainees across 54 programs, positioning it to become Northern California’s largest community-based healthcare training institution. In 2026 alone, Sutter welcomed 198 residents and 23 fellows, filling every position and increasing its incoming class by 36.5% over 2025.
- Investing in cutting-edge technology. Across 22 locations systemwide, including outpatient surgery centers, Sutter operates 59 robotic platforms for minimally invasive procedures. Patients in some more rural locations can receive advanced surgical care without having to travel to bigger cities, and overall robotic-assisted procedures can result in less pain, smaller incisions, fewer complications and shorter hospital stays for patients.
Together, these investments help extend nationally recognized specialty care beyond any one hospital or community, connecting patients with the expertise, services and support they need closer to where they live.
Recognition With Meaning for Patients
Healthgrades’ honors reflect reported patient outcomes across a range of procedures and conditions. For patients, these recognitions can help inform their choices about where to seek care. Across Sutter hospitals, a broad range of specialty services and dedicated care teams help patients heal, recover and return to what matters most to them.
