NORTHERN CALIF. – Graduating medical students and resident physicians seeking specialty training can now apply to Sutter Health’s newest graduate medical education programs, which begin in July 2026. The integrated health system recently gained accreditation for seven additional residency and fellowship tracks, expanding training opportunities across Northern California and strengthening access to specialty care in the communities Sutter serves.

These new programs join 30 residency and fellowship tracks at Sutter. The seven new programs, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, are:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – four residents
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at Sutter Roseville Medical Center – three residents
  • Neurology Residency at Sutter Roseville – three residents
  • Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Sutter Roseville – three fellows
  • Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship at Sutter Roseville – three fellows
  • Gastroenterology Fellowship at Sutter Roseville – two fellows
  • Family Medicine Rural Residency at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento and Sutter Coast Hospital – two residents

By expanding its graduate medical education offerings, Sutter continues toward its goal of preparing more than 18,000 physicians over the next two decades, positioning the system to become the largest community-based training institution in Northern California.

“Our vision for graduate medical education at Sutter is to develop compassionate, collaborative, highly skilled and innovative physician leaders who deliver the highest-quality care and enhance the health of the patients and communities we serve,” said Dr. Lindsay Mazotti, chief medical officer of medical education and science. “Opening these additional programs provides more pathways for physicians to gain advanced training while helping meet the growing demand for specialists across California.”

The programs reflect Sutter’s mission to expand access to high-quality care across urban, suburban and rural areas. Through training in multidisciplinary and community-based settings, residents and fellows learn from mentors at the top of their fields, contribute to clinical excellence and quality improvement research, and prepare for careers as physician leaders.

“Our goal is to provide physicians world-class, hands-on training in specialty fields while also preparing them to meet the unique needs of the communities we serve,” said Dr. Dineen Greer, vice president and designated institutional official for graduate medical education. “These programs ensure our residents and fellows gain the skills, experience and mentorship necessary to become leaders in medicine and deliver the highest quality care to patients across Northern California.”

Applications for the new residency and fellowship programs are now open through the Electronic Residency Application Service or through ResidencyCAS for OB/GYN and emergency medicine, with placement coordinated by the National Residency Matching Program or the appropriate fellowship match system.
