SACRAMENTO, Calif.–Sutter Health has been recognized by Fortune as one of America’s Most Innovative Companies for 2023. Sutter is one of only four healthcare systems in California to earn the distinction. This award, presented by Fortune and Statista Inc., the world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider, selected America’s Most Innovative Companies for 2023 based on product innovation, process innovation and innovation culture.

“At Sutter, we focus on the whole person, their expectations and helping them manage their care in partnership with their care team,” said Chris Waugh, Sutter Health Chief Innovation Officer. “We look at how we can make a new technology or innovation more meaningful for the individual, to create a more connected, seamless care experience.”

Innovation in Action

Sutter’s Design and Innovation Team is dedicated to making healthcare simpler, engaging and more human, fostering a culture of innovation across the Northern California health system.  Recent advancements in innovation across the organization include:

  • Scout by Sutter Health – Launched by Sutter Health in 2021, Scout is a one-of-a-kind, non-clinical digital program that support youth ages 13-23 in building resilience to better manage their everyday mental health. The platform also offers support for their families and caregivers helping them understand difficult emotions and everyday stressors faced by teens and young adults. The non-clinical, educational tool earned recognition as one of Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas.
  • Virtual Symptom Checker – Sutter’s virtual, AI-powered symptom checker – Ada— which is used 62% of the time after normal business hours to help people make informed decisions about their next steps for care. More than 170,000 assessments have been completed since its launch in 2019, helping patients save time and avoid unnecessary costs.

For the evaluation of America’s Most Innovative Companies award Statista deployed online surveys in where employees could score their own company on a scale system, as well as surveyed experts in various fields – from recruiters to management consultants and patent attorneys.

The 300 US-companies with the highest score were awarded as America’s Most Innovative Companies 2023.

“This recognition by Fortune reflects our commitment to enabling more human connections and delivering high-quality, convenient care,” Waugh said. “When we apply creativity into healthcare, we can make healthcare feel more personal – and that’s our goal.”
