Growing up in the San Gabriel Valley, Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group (PAFMG) Dr. Sergio Alvarez found early inspiration in two places: the wrestling mat and his mother’s neurology clinic. A California native through and through, Dr. Alvarez completed all of his education in the state, including residency and fellowship training in Northern California. Today, he brings that lifelong dedication to his work as a sports medicine physician in Mountain View with Sutter Health, blending his athletic past with his passion for helping others.
Wrestling was more than a pastime for Dr. Alvarez—it helped shape his identity and career. He began competing regularly in junior high and went on to wrestle through high school and college at the club level. Though he passed up the opportunity to wrestle competitively in college, he chose a path that would allow him to stay close to the sport while building a future with his then-girlfriend and now wife.
“It was a hard decision, but in retrospect, the best one,” he said. “My wife and best friend and I all went to college together. She was by my side during the long nights of studying, through med school, and even today as we raise our two kids. I couldn’t do this without her.”
That steady support enabled Dr. Alvarez to pursue demanding rotations, train in emergency medicine at UCSF, and eventually specialize in sports medicine. Along the way, he gained valuable experience treating orthopedic injuries—cases that often lead to tangible improvements in a patient’s quality of life. “There’s something very satisfying about helping someone walk out of the clinic pain-free,” he said.
His dual passion for sports and medicine came full circle when he began working with Team USA Wrestling in 2022. A former competitor in the USA Wrestling circuit himself, Dr. Alvarez first joined the team as a physician for the U17 world championships and has since been invited to care for the senior-level men’s and women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman teams. “It’s surreal,” he said. “Sometimes I can’t believe I’m on the sidelines or flying overseas with Team USA. I don’t have anyone in my family who’s done anything like this.”
Closer to home, Dr. Alvarez also serves as a team physician for Bay FC, a professional women’s soccer team in the Bay Area. From pre-game evaluations to emergency medical coordination on the sidelines, his role is critical to player safety and performance. Yet, despite the high-profile nature of the job, he finds just as much fulfillment in the day-to-day clinic work in Mountain View.

Since joining Sutter in 2023, Dr. Alvarez has found a professional home. He praises the organization’s support, flexibility, and openness to innovation. “There’s very little turnover here, which says a lot,” he said. “I feel grateful to be in a place that values its people and is open to new ideas.”
Whether he’s training with the Sunnyvale Wrestling Club, practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, treating world-class athletes or local community members, Dr. Alvarez’s journey—from young wrestler to trusted physician—continues to be defined by purpose, passion, and the people who’ve supported him along the way.
