NORTHERN CALIF. — Three Sutter Health hospitals have earned recognition on Newsweek’s 2025 list of America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers, highlighting excellence in inpatient rehabilitation care across the United States with commitment to personalized, high-quality care.

This year’s list includes 320 top-performing centers nationwide. California is among the most represented states this year, with 24 total hospitals recognized.

Sutter’s State Rankings

CPMC’s repeat No. 1 ranking underscores its leadership in rehabilitation, driven by a focus on patient experience and clinical excellence.

“Being recognized as California’s top rehabilitation center is a true testament to the dedication of our clinicians and therapists,” said Mira El-Katcha, manager of CPMC’s Acute Rehab Center. “Their expertise and compassion help patients achieve remarkable recoveries, and we are honored to be trusted with that journey. Every day, we strive to deliver compassionate, personalized care that empowers patients to regain strength, independence and quality of life.”

Rehabilitation Services at Sutter

Neurosciences

Sutter Health offers comprehensive neuroscience services that support patients through every stage of their care, from advanced stroke treatment and neurosurgery to inpatient rehabilitation and ongoing outpatient therapies. Integrated teams of neurologists, neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists and therapists work as one to deliver evidence-based, compassionate care tailored to each patient’s unique needs. With leading programs in stroke, spine, movement disorders, brain injury and more, Sutter is dedicated to helping patients restore function, improve their quality of life and achieve the best possible outcomes.

On June 4, the system broke ground on the new Advanced Neuroscience Complex, Mission Bernal at CPMC’s Mission Bernal Campus in San Francisco. The five-story, 129,000-square-foot facility has been designed as a regional destination for brain health and is expected to open in 2028. The $442 million complex will unite care delivery, advanced diagnostics and research in one location, with two of Sutter’s nationally recognized programs — the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and the Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center — relocating there.

Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

Rehabilitation teams at Sutter Health utilize advanced technologies such as the ZeroG® robotic system and Ekso® exoskeletons to help patients achieve greater independence and recovery milestones. These achievements are made possible through the dedication of highly trained nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, and physicians with advanced certifications who work together to deliver exceptional, specialized care.

All three of the system’s inpatient rehabilitation programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in multiple specialty areas, including stroke, spinal cord and brain injury care. CARF accreditation signifies that Sutter’s programs meet internationally recognized standards for quality and patient-centered care, reinforcing a commitment to individualized treatment and successful outcomes.

Sutter recently announced plans for the Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Care Complex, Sacramento in downtown Sacramento. Scheduled to open in late 2027, the 120,000-square-foot facility will address regional shortages in orthopedic specialty care and serve as a hub for clinical excellence and innovation.
