Sutter Davis demonstrated lower inpatient mortality rates, with fewer readmissions and complications.
Davis, Calif. ─ Sutter Davis Hospital is one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® according to an independent quality analysis provided by Premier Inc. and reported by Fortune.
For 30 years, the 100 Top Hospitals program, formerly associated with Truven Health Analytics and Fortune/IBM Watson Health, has been producing annual, quantitative studies designed to shine a light on the nation’s highest performing hospitals and health systems. Organizations do not apply to participate in the study, and award winners do not pay to market their honor. Instead, it’s all based on an analysis of publicly reported data—and Sutter Davis is one of only a handful of hospitals in California to have achieved this honor this year.
“We’re so proud to receive this honor, which—more than anything else—is a reflection of how hard the Sutter Davis Hospital team works to provide the care and support that our patients have come to expect from us,” said Tammy Powers, chief administrative officer of Sutter Davis Hospital. “They come to work every day with unparalleled levels of expertise and compassion, and the data behind this recognition quantifies how they are changing and saving lives.”
Sutter Davis Hospital is one of 23 acute care facilities affiliated with Sutter Health, an integrated, not-for-profit network that cares for more than 3 million patients across Northern California. Over the years, the hospital has continued to advance and grow—and is soon to celebrate a major expansion—while retaining the sense of connection and shared purpose embedded in its history as a community hospital. Other recognitions over the years have ranged from five stars from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to “best of” recognition from its hometown newspaper—and many accolades in between.
Comparative performance
A comparative analysis found that the winners of the 100 Top Hospitals program delivered better outcomes while operating more efficiently and at a lower cost compared to non-winning hospitals. Specifically, this year’s winners had:
- Thirty-one percent fewer deaths than non-winning hospitals.
- Nine percent fewer patients with complications.
- Thirty-nine percent fewer healthcare associated infections.
- Nearly twenty percent lower inpatient expenses per discharge.
- Five day shorter average length of stay.
- Better reported patient experience scores.
“As hospitals continue to share the nation’s focus on changing healthcare for the better, hospitals and health systems are recognizing the importance of identifying areas within their walls for quality improvement,” said Leigh Anderson, leader of PINC AI, the technology and services platform of Premier, Inc. “The transparent and nonbiased measures this study provides, helps leaders make informed decisions for change, and proves that Sutter Davis Hospital excels across a range of core performance indicators, which can directly lead to significantly higher quality patient outcomes, with fewer readmissions and complications.”
Eligible hospitals are ranked for performance across 10 measurement grouping areas. For complete methodology details, please review the Methodology section on page 36 of the complete study here.
