SACRAMENTO – Sutter Health is expanding its flagship hospital in Midtown Sacramento by constructing 42 new adult inpatient rooms. This development at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento is part of a larger strategy to accommodate the growing demand for healthcare services in the greater Sacramento region.

The $100 million project will transform 43,320 square feet of shell space on the fifth floor of Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center into a 12-bed intensive care unit and 30 medical-surgical rooms for adult patients. The fourth floor of the Women’s and Children’s Center already houses a 48-bed adult ICU.

“One of our health system’s main priorities is providing increased access for all patients throughout our Northern California footprint,” said Sutter Health CEO and President Warner Thomas. “Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento provides world-class, state-of-the-art care for both adults and children, and this expansion will allow more patients to access the best care available in California’s capital city.”

Construction on the expansion is scheduled to begin in April 2025, with the new rooms expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

“When Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento combined all maternity, pediatric and adult services into our Midtown Sacramento campus in 2015, we reserved space in the newly constructed Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center for future expansion,” said Rachael McKinney, president of Sutter Health’s Greater Sacramento Market. “As demand for our services has increased, we determined the best use for this space would be to add 42 adult inpatient beds.”

Five of the eight floors at Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center are dedicated to pediatrics and maternity care. These floors include a pediatric ICU, high-risk maternity unit, Northern California’s largest neonatal ICU, and 51 private rooms on the top floor for mothers and newborns with views of downtown Sacramento and the foothills.

The Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento project is part of a broader Sutter Health growth strategy in Northern California, which includes plans to open 24 new care centers across its footprint. With new facilities and services strategically located, the aim is to increase access to primary and specialty care doctors, reduce travel times for patients, and provide timely access to essential healthcare services.

This expansion at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento follows other recent enhancements to hospitals in Sutter’s Greater Sacramento Market. Earlier this month, Sutter Health began a renovation at Sutter Roseville Medical Center to add 24 medical-surgical patient rooms and a 12-bed adult ICU. Last year, Sutter completed an expansion of Sutter Davis Hospital, which included five new general acute care beds and enhancements to the emergency and maternity departments.
