NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — Sutter Health was named one of America’s Greatest Workplaces 2025 by Newsweek, recognizing the organization’s commitment to employee well-being and fostering a positive, engaging workplace culture. While long known for delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients, this honor highlights Sutter’s focus on supporting and caring for its people.
Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group recognized companies through a comprehensive assessment involving employee interviews, company reviews, publicly accessible data and an analysis of over 120 key performance indicators.
“A positive and energizing culture is the foundation of exceptional patient care,” said Warner Thomas, President and CEO of Sutter Health. “It’s our goal to be the best employer in the nation — one where our 60,000 employees, physicians and clinicians can pursue meaningful careers that make a difference in people’s lives. This recognition is another step in that direction. When our team feels valued, supported, and motivated, they bring their best selves to work every day — resulting in the highest quality care, and best possible outcomes and experience for patients.”
Sutter is creating an energizing and purpose-driven culture to attract, engage and retain the best people through a variety of areas, including:
- A unified mission. The organization’s ONE Sutter culture is grounded in our values and a shared purpose: caring for our patients first and people always.
- Optimal work environment. Through effective leadership, great teamwork, and a growth mindset, we create an optimal work environment that supports excellence, collaboration, curiosity and innovation.
- Comprehensive support. Sutter’s robust total rewards program promotes supporting employees’ physical, emotional, and financial health and well-being — because when our people thrive, our patients do, too.
- Growth at every level. We prioritize development opportunities through robust learning and training, career pathways and leadership programs, helping team members continuously build skills and realize their personal and professional aspirations.
At the heart of Sutter’s mission lies a bold aspiration: to be the industry leader in cultivating talent. It’s not just a statement, but a commitment to our people, culture and future. At Sutter, we believe investing in career potential not only boosts engagement and retention but also ensures we are building a resilient, future-ready workforce.
As a result of this focus and our continuous efforts to seek feedback from our people and take action in response, we had a record 88% response rate in our annual Experience of Work survey in 2024. Additionally, 85% of those respondents recommended Sutter Health as a good place to work, an increase of more than 6% from last year. Sutter has seen a positive impact on employee retention as well, reducing turnover to 10.7%, well below the national industry average. We also reenergized our new employee onboarding process and saw first-year turnover decrease 40% from March 2023-March 2024.
Sutter is enhancing staffing by developing proactive plans for staffing needs, and recruiting more caregivers, physicians, clinicians and team members to serve the growing organization as we expand to serve even more patients and communities.
“At the heart of our success lies our incredible culture. It’s the dedication, collaboration, and innovation of our team that drives us forward every day,” said Deborah Yount, Sutter Health SVP, Chief Human Resources Officer. “We foster an environment where every voice is heard, every idea is valued, and every individual is empowered to reach their full potential. It’s this environment that ultimately benefits our patients and communities.”
