Three Sutter Health hospitals were recently named “Great Community Hospitals” by Becker’s Hospital Review. Only nine other California hospitals made the list this year.

Recognized hospitals are known for clinical excellence, compassionate care, positive economic impact on their communities and more. Many of the hospitals listed have been honored as top-ranking by award agencies for their stellar patient outcomes and performance in specialty care services.

Sutter hospitals recognized, include:

  • Sutter’s Eden Medical Center | Located in Castro Valley, the 130-bed hospital is the regional Level II trauma center for Southern Alameda County and features various centers of excellence, including neuroscience, orthopedics, rehabilitation, birthing center, imaging, stroke, cancer care and healing garden. The medical center first opened its doors in 1954 and throughout the decades has expanded its buildings, programs and services to meet the community’s healthcare needs. In 2023, Eden Medical Center was named among America’s Top 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades, earned high-performing ratings by U.S. News & World Report and received five stars—the highest ranking possible—by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) overall hospital quality star ratings.

  • Sutter’s Mills-Peninsula Medical Center | Located in Burlingame, the 241-bed general acute care hospital provides both inpatient and outpatient services to the community, including a 24-hour emergency care, surgery, radiology, cardiovascular services, all private patient rooms and family sleeping accommodations in all medical/surgical, obstetric, intensive care, and neonatal intensive care rooms. The medical center is a Baby-Friendly hospital and is designed with advanced earthquake technology. In the past year, Mills-Peninsula Medical Center has earned numerous awards for quality care, including a Best Hospital in the state ranking by U.S. News & World Report, a recognition by Healthgrades as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals and five-star CMS overall hospital quality star ratings.

  • Sutter Roseville Medical Center | With over 70 years of experience serving its community, Sutter Roseville Medical Center offers a comprehensive lineup of services and offerings ranging from primary and family care to maternity care to senior and geriatric care. A new expansion in 2020 allowed for a larger campus, updated emergency department, new intensive care unit and expanded cardiac care. As a teaching hospital with recent accreditations for a graduate medical education in surgery and internal medicine, the medical center is continuously improving itself. Sutter Roseville Medical Center was recognized this year as a Best Hospital in the state by U.S. News & World Report, a 50 Best Hospital in the nation by Healthgrades and earned five-star ratings by CMS overall hospital quality star ratings, among other recognitions.

Per Becker’s, the hospitals named on the list show above-and-beyond commitment to their communities. Their expertise helps expand care access to patients who would otherwise face barriers such as cost or distance.

The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on analysis of ranking and award agencies, including the U.S. News & World Report 2022-23 rankings, Healthgrades, Centers for Medicaid star ratings and other rankings. Becker’s also accepted nominations.
