MODESTO, Calif.–Sutter Memorial Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards.

The certification, offered in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, focuses on the pre-surgical orthopedic consultation to the intraoperative hospitalization, rehabilitation activities, and follow-up visit with the orthopedic surgeon.

“We are proud of our efforts to support an exceptional patient experience, and this recognition reflects our commitment to providing safe and high-quality care,” said Dr. Jonathon R. Staples, department chair for orthopedics and orthopedic center of excellence physician co-champion at Sutter Memorial Medical Center.

During the visit to Sutter Memorial Medical Center, the Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards including program management, delivering and facilitating clinical care, supporting self-management, clinical information management and performance improvement. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts, providers and patients. The reviewer also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

“Consistent multidisciplinary coordination was essential to helping earn this recognition. It is a testament to the dedicated teams that strive for clinical excellence and continuous improvement, which help patients achieve their best outcomes,” said Dr. William Whang, orthopedic center of excellence physician co-champion at Sutter Memorial Medical Center.

Sutter Memorial Medical Center is one of three Sutter hospitals to earn or maintain this certification, along with Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento and Sutter’s Novato Community Hospital.

“Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification recognizes health care organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Ken Grubbs, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer from The Joint Commission. “We commend Sutter Memorial Medical Center for using The Joint Commission certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and to strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher quality and more compassionate care for individuals served.”
