A Northern California physician stands as the only in the world to receive a prestigious industry honor.

Dr. Anil Neelakantan, a board-certified neurologist in Stockton, Calif. with Gould Medical Group, earned the American Academy of Neurology’s 2026 General Neurology Award. The award recognizes exemplary service, clinical excellence and innovation that are critical for patients. “I am humbled and honored to be selected for this recognition from the AAN,” said Dr. Neelakantan. “None of this work happens in isolation. It reflects the collaborative approach we take at Sutter, supported by an exceptional care team and strong leadership, so that patients benefit from careful evaluation and coordinated, high-quality comprehensive neurologic care.”

More About Dr. Neelakantan

Dr. Neelakantan turned a lifelong fascination with the brain into a calling that has shaped his career for more than two decades. He noted that early interests in physics, chemistry, math and biology naturally led him to neurology, “where these fields come together in the most elegant and beautiful way.” Caring for people with complex neurologic conditions, he added, is both an honor and an immense responsibility, one rooted in the trust patients place in their care team.

His career highlights and award-winning accomplishments include:

  • Expanding access to neurologic testing by establishing and leading Sutter’s only electromyography and nerve conduction studies service in San Joaquin County, which evaluates nerve and muscle function and helps patients receive accurate diagnoses closer to home.
  • Enhancing care team communication and practice experience through more effective use of the electronic medical record, reducing back-office staff workload by 35%.
  • Championing technology innovations that improved care delivery, including more reliable telehealth visits and smarter digital tools for patients and care teams and pioneering enhancing digital scheduling.
  • Customizing tools available in medical records to optimize patient communication, improving patient satisfaction and reducing redundant communications by 61%.

Advancing Excellence in Neuroscience

“General neurology often involves the most complex and uncertain cases, which is exactly why Dr. Neelakantan’s work has been recognized by the AAN,” said Dr. Shawn Kile, chair of Sutter’s Advanced Neuroscience Service Line. “He has an exceptional ability to synthesize complex neurologic information and apply it in a way that directly benefits patients. His judgment and collaborative mindset strengthen care delivery across the system.”

“Dr. Neelakantan represents the very best of what general neurology can be,” added Dr. Tamim Wafa, president and CEO of Gould Medical Group. “His work advances clinical excellence, supports our physicians and improves outcomes for the communities we serve.”

Dr. Neelakantan will be formally recognized at the AAN Annual Meeting in Chicago this April and has been elected a Fellow of the organization – a highly selective honor recognizing excellence in patient care, leadership, teaching and mentorship, and contributions to advancing neurology.
