The California Ambulatory Surgery Association (CASA), a leader in the state’s ambulatory surgery industry with membership totaling nearly 400 ASCs, awarded Sutter surgery centers with 10 of 15 ASC Excellence Awards at its annual conference.

The Excellence Award is based on five pillar categories acknowledging a CASA member facility that exemplifies best practices in the surgery center industry, plus actively promotes and advocates for ASC excellence and inclusion in the healthcare delivery system.

The following 10 Sutter ASCs earned Excellence Awards for 2025:

  • San Francisco Endoscopy Center
  • San Leandro Surgery Center
  • Surgery Center Fremont
  • Surgery Center San Carlos
  • Surgery Center San Jose
  • Sutter Elk Grove Surgery Center
  • Sutter Samaritan Surgery Center
  • Sutter Santa Rosa Surgery & Endoscopy Center
  • Sutter Sierra Surgery Center
  • Walnut Creek Endoscopy & Surgery Center

“These awards reflect the hard work, compassion and commitment to excellence that our ASC team members embody to ensure patients receive the highest level of safe, quality surgical care,” said Sutter Surgery Center Division CEO Brad Heaton. “They’re well-deserving of this special recognition.”

While Sutter’s 37 ASCs represent less than 10% of CASA’s members, they have taken home 70% of ASC Excellence Awards since 2017. This includes four ASC of the Year Awards, which is the highest honor within CASA’s award program.

Surgery Teams At Sutter

Digital innovation plays a crucial role in recognitions like these, driving Sutter’s mission to deliver safe, high-quality and compassionate care for all. By embracing the transformative power of innovative digital technologies, the system is constantly evolving and advancing new ways to enhance every aspect of patient care.

For example, many Sutter gastroenterologists are now using GI Genius — a “smart” endoscopy module that uses AI to help doctors identify colorectal polyps during colonoscopies — and in their work providing high-quality care. Earlier this year Blue Cross/Blue Shield recognized 10 Sutter ASCs with Blue Distinction® honors for safe, effective, and cost-efficient total knee and hip replacement surgery.

Sutter ASC teams are also regularly honored by national publications. Several Sutter ASCs were again recognized in 2025 by U.S. News & World Report with Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers honors, and Sutter’s ASCs are consistently ranked on Newsweek’s list of Best ASCs.

“The highly skilled surgeons and staff at Sutter’s ASCs are leaders in the field, not just embracing but pioneering new surgical techniques and technological advances,” said Dr. Peter Bravos, chief medical officer of the Sutter Surgery Center Division. “This commitment to innovation allows us to deliver exceptional care while setting a new standard for surgical efficiency and patient outcomes.”
