ELK GROVE, Calif. – As part of its comprehensive efforts to improve access for patients throughout California, Sutter Health plans to expand its Elk Grove campus by constructing a new 56,000-square-foot, two-story specialty care center. The $67.8 million project will bring 44 additional physicians to its Sutter Elk Grove Care Complex on Laguna Boulevard and expand the current Sutter Urgent Care center. Construction is expected to begin by summer 2025 and to be completed in 2026.

In the greater Sacramento region, Sutter is building care centers in some of the fastest-growing cities in the state. The city of Elk Grove, with a population of nearly 200,000, has grown rapidly in the past 20 years and at one time was the fastest-growing city in the United States. In addition, Sutter is planning to build multi-care complexes in the nearby communities of Folsom and Roseville.

“With this expansion, the residents of Elk Grove and neighboring communities will have access to specialty physicians and services closer to home. This includes physician specialists in cardiology, neurology, urology and women’s health,” said Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “In addition, the new care center will provide the opportunity to expand our primary care services, bringing additional family medicine physicians to this growing community.”

Sutter Elk Grove Surgery Center

The new multi-specialty care center will be constructed just south of the Sutter Elk Grove Surgery Center, where physician specialists will perform outpatient surgeries.

The new Sutter Elk Grove multi-specialty care center will be constructed on land owned by Sutter located just south of the existing Sutter outpatient surgical center at 8200 Laguna Blvd. and southeast of the current care center at 8170 Laguna Blvd. Of the 44 additional clinicians expected to be located on the campus due to the new construction, 27 will be specialists and 17 will be additional primary-care physicians for families and individuals of all ages. They will join the 20 primary-care physicians and about five specialists that currently practice at the Sutter Elk Grove Care Complex.

With the addition of more specialty physicians to the campus, Sutter hopes to provide more access to surgical procedures at its Sutter Elk Grove Surgery Center, which offers outpatient surgeries.

“We are excited to bring more specialty physicians and services to the residents of southern Sacramento County and northern San Joaquin County,” said Sutter Medical Group Chief Medical Officer Dr. Karun Grossman. “Along with the surgery center, urgent care, lab, imaging and other ancillary services, the Sutter Elk Grove Care Complex will provide a one-stop-shop location for many of their healthcare needs in a single convenient campus.”

The specialty services and physicians to be brought to the Sutter Elk Grove Care Complex due to the new care center construction include:

  • Cardiology Clinic
  • Dermatology & Mohs Surgery Clinic
  • Gastroenterology Clinic
  • General Surgery Clinic
  • Neurology Clinic
  • Obstetrics/Gynecology Clinic
  • Orthopedics Clinic
  • Physical Medicine & Rehab Clinic
  • Urology Clinic

The Elk Grove multi-specialty care center is the latest example of Sutter Health’s broader expansion plans. The health system is on pace to open 24 new care centers across Northern California in 2024. With new facilities and services strategically located, the aim is to increase access to primary and specialty care doctors, reduce travel times for patients and provide timely access to essential healthcare services.

“Adding more care locations for patients and families is just one part of how Sutter plans to expand patient access now and in the future,” said Rachael McKinney, Sutter Health’s Greater Sacramento president. “We have recruited more than 250 physicians to the area alone, expanded pathways for the next generation of caregivers and added digital health support that will help meet the growing demand for our services and enhance the overall patient experience.”
