Future-forward Center Further Solidifies Downtown as Entertainment, Healthcare Destination
NORTHERN CALIF. – Building on its 100-plus year tradition of caring for Northern Californians, Sutter Health is proud to unveil plans for the Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Care Complex, Sacramento, a destination center of excellence scheduled to open in late 2027 in the heart of downtown Sacramento. This 120,000-square-foot facility will become a beacon of clinical excellence and innovation, designed to address the region’s growing demand for orthopedic specialty medicine where shortages currently exist.
“For more than a century, we’ve had the privilege of serving Sacramento, and we’re proud to deepen that commitment through this exciting project,” said Warner Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “This investment is another step forward in our pursuit to differentiate our highly specialized centers of excellence and comes on the heels of announcing a new cancer center in Modesto and a neurosciences center in San Francisco last year with more to come. This is part of a continued focus on highlighting our exceptional, national-caliber physicians and clinicians and differentiating our advanced capabilities and the services we provide. Putting everything under one roof in downtown Sacramento provides the best, most accessible and integrated experience for our patients.”
The Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Care Complex, conveniently located at 660 J St., will be an easily accessible, comprehensive “one-stop shop” for high-caliber orthopedics and sports medicine care.
- Orthopedics: Clinical teams will support comprehensive spine care. Advanced spine surgery options include minimally invasive spinal fusion, spinal deformity correction, motion-preserving disc replacement, as well as leading-edge joint replacement surgery.
- Sports medicine and concussion clinics: These unique clinics will offer immediate access to expert care, reducing referral wait times for patients.
- Physical therapy: Recovery and rehabilitation are a key part of the healing process, which will help patients regain strength, flexibility and mobility.
- Ambulatory surgery center: For more advanced treatment options, this state-of-the-art facility will focus on minimally invasive procedures and the latest techniques, supporting more efficient and effective recovery for patients.
- Diagnostic imaging: Advanced diagnostic imaging services, including X-rays and MRIs, will help diagnose and assess injuries.
- Sports psychology: Mental well-being helps achieve peak physical performance. Specialized sports psychology services will help athletes optimize their mental approach, overcome challenges and stay focused on their goals, whether it’s managing performance anxiety, recovering from an injury or strengthening mental resilience.
- Nutrition support: Nutrition is essential to performance and recovery. Nutritionists will work closely with athletes of all levels to create personalized plans that promote healing, enhance strength and help maintain peak physical performance.
Future service offerings will feature expanded treatment options fueled by research, as Sutter Health continues to grow as a destination center for clinical trials in orthopedics and sports medicine, and other specialty areas like cancer, neuroscience, heart and vascular care. As a community-based health system, Sutter Health seeks to rapidly translate research findings to care that drives improved patient outcomes across its footprint. Sutter’s graduate medical education programs will eventually have a presence at the complex as well, helping broaden dynamic pathways to train and retain the highest-caliber physicians.
“This complex represents an unparalleled opportunity to deliver comprehensive, specialized orthopedics and sports medicine — and will only benefit from the guidance of Dr. Deryk Jones, a nationally recognized physician leader and our new orthopedics and sports medicine service-line chair,” said Dr. Todd Smith, orthopedic surgeon and chief physician executive for Sutter Health. “With the support of local medical groups and community physician partners, our teams will provide the care needed by everyone from everyday athletes to ‘weekend warriors’ alike to provide the care they need to reach their full potential and empower them to return to doing what they love with confidence.”
The Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Care Complex, Sacramento promises to blend top-tier medical expertise with a convenient and connected patient experience. This expansion announcement comes at a time when physician ranks are growing. Sutter hired nearly 400 physicians in the Sacramento region over the past year and will recruit more than 30 physicians and advanced practice clinicians for this center in areas such as orthopedic surgery, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging and weight management. They will join 15 existing physicians and clinicians that will relocate to this location.
By addressing current gaps in care and offering comprehensive resources, the complex will elevate downtown Sacramento’s position not only as a destination for dining and entertainment, but also as a home for world-class specialty medical care.
“As Sacramento continues to grow, this expansion of Sutter Health’s services underscores the region’s importance as a hub for healthcare innovation,” said Rachael McKinney, president of Sutter Health’s Greater Sacramento Division. “We are opening multiple new care centers, urgent care sites and ambulatory surgery centers across the greater Sacramento area over the next few years, including key projects in Elk Grove, Folsom and Roseville, so patients can access leading-edge care no matter where they are in the region. This is part of our bold vision to serve more than 1 million patients across the area by 2030.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Sutter Health to SixSixty in downtown Sacramento,” added Alex Bhathal, executive chairman for Revitate and RevOZ Capital. “This investment into downtown is a further milestone in the revitalization of Sacramento’s urban core that has occurred since the opening of the Golden 1 Center.”
