Sutter Health has launched a new subspecialty-focused Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) program at CPMC’s Pacific Heights Outpatient Center campus. Led by Dr. William Ryan and a team of expert clinicians, the new service will diagnose and treat complex head and neck conditions for people across San Francisco, the Greater Bay Area and beyond. It will also improve timely access to care for those in need of highly specialized treatment.

“Our goal is simple – connect patients with the right experts when and where they need them,” said Christina Oh, president of Sutter’s Greater San Francisco Division. “As a key part of Sutter’s comprehensive cancer services, this marquee program will serve as a regional hub for head and neck cancer surgery and a wide range of subspecialties, including voice and hearing, facial reconstruction and advanced neurotologic care, ensuring patients receive coordinated care close to home.”

Quote that reads: “Patients needing advanced otolaryngology-head and neck surgery often face complex diseases in a rapidly evolving and nuanced treatment landscape. Sutter’s plan to bring together a team of top-tier specialists in one location will be transformative.”

The Sutter OHNS program at CPMC focuses on conditions and diseases affecting the ears, nose, throat and related structures of the head and neck. This includes head and neck cancers; neurotology (disorders of the ear and skull base); otology (hearing and balance); audiology (hearing evaluations); laryngology (voice and swallowing disorders); facial plastic and reconstructive surgery; rhinology (sinus and nasal disorders); and sleep surgery.

The new, comprehensive OHNS program was established with a $25 million investment from Sutter Health. It is guided by nationally recognized head and neck oncologic surgeon Dr. William Ryan, who serves as the program’s director. Dr. Ryan, in collaboration with Sutter West Bay Medical Group, leads a multidisciplinary team that includes Dr. Patrick Carpenter (head and neck oncologic and microvascular reconstructive surgery), Dr. Katherine Yung (laryngology, voice and swallowing), Dr. Kambridge Hribar (comprehensive otolaryngology), and Dr. Gaelen Stanford-Moore (facial plastic and reconstructive surgery). An otologist/neurotologist and audiology center will arrive in the fall of 2025. The program emphasizes coordinated care through a multidisciplinary approach, supported by experienced speech-language pathologists, audiologists and advanced practice clinicians. This model reduces the need for multiple appointments across different offices and allows patients to spend more time with their physician.

“As a surgeon, I am excited to build this program at Sutter to expand access to high-quality, subspecialty-specific tertiary and quaternary care in Northern California,” said Dr. Ryan. “Patients needing advanced otolaryngology-head and neck surgery often face complex diseases in a rapidly evolving and nuanced treatment landscape. Sutter’s plan to bring together a team of top-tier specialists in one location will be transformative. With expertise across the full spectrum of ear, nose and throat disorders – along with dedicated speech-language pathology and audiology – we’re helping patients receive advanced, coordinated care designed to lead to exceptional outcomes. This team will make a lasting impact on many lives. I’m honored to be part of its launch.”

A Regional Hub for Comprehensive Head and Neck Care

Sutter’s new OHNS program at CPMC incorporates leading-edge techniques, from extensive surgical procedures to minimally invasive approaches, within state-of-the-art facilities. The program will offer comprehensive services, including head and neck cancer services, laryngology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, rhinology, otology/neurotology and sleep surgery. Surgical procedures will be performed at Sutter’s CPMC Van Ness and Davies campuses in San Francisco. Consultations and follow-up care will take place on the fifth floor of the 2340 Clay Street clinic and at the Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery clinic at 2351 Clay Street, part of Sutter’s CPMC-Pacific Heights Outpatient Center campus.

Sutter Health is a leader in cancer care, with more than 20 cancer programs across Northern California dedicated to providing high-quality, integrated services. This includes four dedicated locations at Sutter’s CPMC in San Francisco, Sutter Cancer Centers in Sacramento and Roseville, as well as the Palo Alto Medication Foundation Cancer Center. The new OHNS program at CPMC will work closely with referring physicians to streamline access to its specialized care. This collaboration ensures patients benefit from multidisciplinary expertise, advanced treatments and seamless care coordination across Sutter’s system.

“This program is a game-changer for head and neck care in the region,” said Meredith Hileman, CEO of Sutter West Bay Medical Group. “By creating a single regional hub, we’re helping close a critical gap in access and drastically reducing wait times for new appointments. This means faster, more coordinated care that prioritizes patients’ health and well-being every step of the way.”
