Sutter Health’s long-standing commitment to patient safety has earned national recognition, with nine hospital campuses named recipients of the 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades.

Announced during National Patient Safety Awareness Week, this distinction places these hospitals among the top 5% to 10% nationwide for patient safety, reflecting Sutter’s consistent focus on delivering safe, high-quality care.

The following Sutter hospital campuses received the 2026 Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™:

“Patient safety excellence doesn’t happen by chance — it reflects the strength of a culture where everyone is empowered to speak up and take action to protect patients,” said Dr. William Isenberg, chief medical and quality officer at Sutter Health. “Our teams’ commitment to safety, reliability and continuous improvement makes achievements like this possible.”

To determine national leaders in patient safety, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates from approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide across 13 patient safety indicators, each representing a serious, potentially preventable complication.

“The data behind this year’s Patient Safety Excellence Award highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications,” said Dr. Alana Biggers, medical advisor at Healthgrades. “By prioritizing evidence-based safety practices, these nine Sutter hospital campuses are achieving better clinical outcomes while cultivating a culture where patients come first.”

Commitment to Safety

As a high-reliability organization, Sutter fosters a culture in which every team member is encouraged to speak up and prevent harm. Key efforts include:

  • Frontline peer support focused on safe care practices. More than 1,800 trained Reliability Coaches work alongside care teams, reinforcing proven safety practices at the bedside.
  • Active leadership engagement in patient safety. Leaders participate in regular safety huddles to identify risks early, respond quickly and reinforce shared accountability.
  • Systemwide commitment through Sutter Safe Care. Launched in 2018, Sutter Safe Care is Sutter’s flagship safety program, supported by ongoing training, core competencies and structured processes that promote high reliability and effective communication.
