Artificial intelligence (AI) focuses on building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence like learning, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. AI is considered the next frontier for health care innovation. AI includes both structured data (highly organized and formatted in a way so it’s easily searchable in relational databases) and unstructured data (no pre-defined format or organization, making it much more difficult to collect, process, and analyze). Fields like oncology, neurology, and cardiology are experiencing a growing application of AI, but it is permeating and benefiting all aspects of health care.
