For medical students, Match Day represents a life-altering moment that aspiring physicians have worked toward for years. It marks the culmination of tireless work, late nights studying and clinical rotations. Each year, medical students across the U.S. are paired with a residency program to begin the next step in their medical career.

“After nervously waiting all morning to find out where I’d be moving for the next three years, I opened my envelope and saw I matched at Sutter Health,” reflects Dr. Yohanna Khachiyan, second-year internal medicine resident at Sutter’s California Pacific Medical Center. “I was relieved and excited to stay in Northern California where I grew up. Having rotated through various Sutter hospitals during medical school, I already had a good feeling about the match and was thrilled to spend the next few years there.”

“For all our faculty, it’s a magical day,” says Dr. Ryan Spielvogel, program director for the family medicine residency program at Sutter hospitals in Sacramento, Davis and Amador. “For me, it’s also a day to welcome new colleagues. Over time having seen so many of our residents flourish and become family physicians in Sutter, I know many of those bright young faces will one day be our care partners.”

Sutter aims to become one of the leading physician training programs in Northern California. Every year, the system continues expanding its graduate medical education programs, increasing the number of physicians to address ongoing shortages and broadening access to care for patients.

“There is an incredible amount of support, mentorship and opportunities to grow offered to learners at Sutter,” said Dr. Logan Bailey, a first-year emergency medicine resident at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. “Starting with orientation, we were able to converse directly with leaders. Once on site, the faculty put an enormous amount of time and dedication into teaching to ensure we were prepared to succeed in the clinical environment.”

Growing with the Program: Setting a Foundation for a Career in Medicine

Today Sutter Health will welcome 187 doctors into residency and fellowship programs for the 2025 academic year—filling 100% of its programs’ openings throughout the organization. The system is on track to continually increase the number of learners each year and expand the program footprint to train nearly 1,000 residents and fellow physicians by 2030.

“Our goal is to cultivate a supportive, inspiring, responsive and enriching training environment that positions residents and fellows to thrive, excel and lead in delivering highly specialized care,” says Dr. Dineen Greer, vice president of Graduate Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official. “Residents will train in diverse communities in both urban and rural settings—from the bustling pulse of large cities to smaller centers with specialized and multifaceted healthcare needs. We are honored to equip the next generation of physicians with the skills and knowledge necessary to lead the future of medicine so more patients may benefit.”

Crafting an Experience that Shapes the Future of Medicine

With another successful Match Day on the record, current residents at Sutter share some helpful advice for those embarking on the next step in their medical careers:

“Take time for yourself and do whatever it is that recharges you and fills you with joy,” said Dr. Bailey. “If you’re like me you’ll find a lot of that comes from the truly great people here, including existing residents, so make friends, build connections, and don’t be afraid to reach out for support.”
