“I’m excited to highlight the broad range of training experiences our residents can expect,” said Dr. Harish Rengarajan, program director of the transitional year residency program. “We’ve designed this program to provide a robust foundation in clinical skills across multiple specialties, ensuring our trainees develop both the expertise and confidence necessary to thrive in their subsequent residencies.”

The structure of the Transitional Year program at Alta Bates Summit will mirror the Transitional Year residency program at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. The successful training format cycles learners through key fields of medicine such as internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery and various subspecialties.

“We are thrilled to congratulate Alta Bates Summit on its recent accreditation achievement,” says Dr. Rishi Menon, Sutter Roseville’s program director. “At our program, we take great pride in supporting the development of our residents and helping them reach their potential. This new accreditation for transitional year residency training highlights the system’s commitment and underscores the advancement of clinical excellence, ultimately benefiting the patients we serve.”

The first class of the Alta Bates Summit Transitional Year program begins in July 2025. Residents will rotate through general and specialized medical experiences, engaging in comprehensive training to meet unique patient needs with a well-rounded approach to caring for patients in communities big and small.

Residents will be part of a close-knit, collaborative community that’s deeply committed to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care, explains Dr. Rengarajan. “Beyond the hospital, Oakland and the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area offer a culturally rich setting that encourages community engagement and personal development.”

Elevating standards of care through mentorship

Along with interactive coaching, Transitional Year residency programs encourage fresh perspectives and collaboration across the Sutter system. Through medical apprenticeship, continual learning and shared best practices, this accreditation further solidifies Sutter’s commitment to achieving a new level of clinical excellence.
