At a time when employee satisfaction and workplace culture are more critical than ever, Sutter Health has emerged as a standout leader, recently earning a spot on Forbes’ list of America’s Best Employers in California. Sutter is 50 out of 101 organizations recognized on the Forbes list, and in the top 10 of healthcare organizations in the state. While Sutter has long been recognized for its high-quality, compassionate healthcare for patients, this recognition highlights the organization’s focus on employees’ well-being and fostering an engaging culture.
The Forbes ranking, which considers a range of factors, including work-life balance, compensation and career development opportunities, reflects Sutter’s holistic approach to employee engagement and satisfaction. More than 160,000 employees of companies across the country were surveyed to create the list. Respondents were asked to evaluate their employers and how likely they were to recommend working for their employer on a scale of 0 to 10.
“Our people are at the heart of Sutter Health and are the most critical component of our ongoing progress and success,” said Warner Thomas, Sutter Health President and CEO. “Employees who know they are valued, appreciated and empowered drive innovation and excellence that benefits our people, patients and communities. It’s all part of what’s making Sutter among the best places to work and practice medicine.”
Sutter is creating an energizing and purpose-driven culture to attract, engage and retain the best people through a variety of areas, including:
- Connected and Inclusive Culture: A values-driven, collaborative environment focused on patient and employee care—committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Competitive Total Rewards: Competitive salaries, retirement plans and a range of health and wellness benefits to meet diverse employee needs.
- Total Well-Being: Support for physical, emotional, financial and social well-being with comprehensive resources, including employee resource groups.
- Workplace Safety: Advanced technology and strict safety protocols to help protect the health and safety of employees.
- Ongoing Growth Opportunity: Robust learning and career development opportunities, including leadership courses, online training and mentorship programs.
- Open Two-Way Communication: Transparent and thoughtful engagement between employees and organizational leaders.
- Meaningful Recognition: A systemwide focus on feedback and recognition—celebrating milestones and wins.
As a result of these investments in Sutter’s workforce, Sutter is seeing a downward trend in employee turnover. Since February 2024, Sutter’s turnover rate has been at or below 12%, which is well below industry benchmark.
“It’s an exciting time to be part of Sutter Health,” said Gail Lerch, Sutter Health Chief Human Resources Officer. “We’re creating a caring environment that empowers people to make a difference for our patients and communities. This is what makes Sutter Health the best place for a meaningful and fulfilling career.”
Sutter Health was also recently named to Forbes’ 2024 list of the Best Employers for Diversity and Newsweek’s 2024 America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity. The organization includes more than 57,000 employees, including 15,000+ nurses, 2,000 advanced practice clinicians and 12,000 physicians.
