NORTHERN CALIF. — Sutter Health announced today it received accreditation for a gastroenterology fellowship program at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, marking a significant milestone in the not-for-profit health system’s continued investment in physician training and specialty care.

This new fellowship program, recently approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, is the second in gastroenterology offered across the Sutter Health network. It will train two fellows per year over three years, with the first class set to begin in July 2026. The program’s goal is to strengthen the physician workforce and expand access to high-quality, specialized digestive health services across Northern California.

“The accreditation of this gastroenterology fellowship is a milestone that demonstrates Sutter Health’s commitment to growing the physician workforce and improving access to specialty care across Northern California,” Dr. Dineen Greer says.

Fellows enrolled in the program will receive hands-on clinical training at Sutter Roseville Medical Center and complete advanced rotations in liver disease and transplant care at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. The program is designed to provide in-depth exposure to a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions and procedures, along with mentorship and leadership development.

“This program fills a critical gap for our patients and communities,” said Dr. Dineen Greer, Vice President and Designated Institutional Official for Medical Education. “The accreditation of this gastroenterology fellowship is a milestone that demonstrates Sutter Health’s commitment to growing the physician workforce and improving access to specialty care across Northern California.”

Gastroenterology is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the digestive system, including the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and related organs. This fellowship will offer physicians advanced training in managing a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, from inflammatory bowel disease to liver failure.

“This fellowship represents a significant investment in the future of digestive healthcare across our region,” said Dr. Inder Singh, gastroenterology fellowship program director. “Our fellows will be immersed in complex clinical environments where they’ll develop deep expertise in endoscopic procedures, liver disease management and comprehensive gastrointestinal care.”

In addition to clinical excellence, the fellowship emphasizes developing leadership skills in areas such as care team management, patient communication and health advocacy. The program aligns with Sutter Health’s broader mission to improve health outcomes, support medical education, and meet the demand for specialty care in both urban and rural communities.

“Sutter Health continues to grow as a premier destination for medical training and research,” said Dr. Lindsay Mazotti, Chief Medical Officer of Medical Education and Science. “The addition of this fellowship builds on our vision to offer diverse, high-impact learning opportunities while expanding access to specialized services for the patients we serve.”

Applications for the new gastroenterology fellowship will open in the fall of 2025.

This is the second fellowship program accredited at Sutter Roseville. The cardiovascular disease fellowship, which will begin this summer, offers comprehensive training in various subspecialties, including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, advanced heart failure and cardiac imaging.

The first class of resident physicians at Sutter Roseville Medical Center began their training in June 2022, marking the hospital’s transformation into Placer County’s first teaching hospital. This inaugural class included 19 residents across internal medicine and general surgery programs. Since then, the graduate medical education program has expanded rapidly, now encompassing more than 100 resident physicians in five accredited residency programs — general surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesiology and a transitional-year track. Two additional residency programs in neurology and Ob/Gyn are set to launch in 2026, positioning Sutter Roseville as one of the fastest-growing teaching hospitals in Northern California.
