Recognition Based on Clinical Outcomes, Operational Efficiency and Patient Experience Results

SACRAMENTO – Sutter Health was named this week among the top 15 health systems in the country, according to an independent quality analysis performed by Premier, Inc. Sutter was recognized as a top five performer in the large health systems category and was the only health system in California to achieve a 15 Top Health Systems™ designation.

The study provided by PINC AI™, the technology and services brand of Premier, Inc. and reported by Fortune magazine, evaluated 355 health systems using publicly available Medicare Provider Analysis and Review and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Care Compare data sets.

The study identified 15 large, medium and small health systems that achieved superior performance based on a combined score of eight performance indicators that measure an organization’s clinical outcomes, operational efficiency and patient experience. Sutter Health was recognized as a top five performer among large health systems.

“Across Sutter Health, our physicians, clinicians and care teams continue to raise the bar and focus on improving health outcomes for our patients and communities,” said Warner Thomas, Sutter Health President & CEO. “Our dedication to innovating with patients in mind never stops, and this designation recognizes the great strides we’ve made and continue to make in enhancing patient care, access and experience.”

Sutter’s integrated health system invests in innovations and programs to fuel advancements in patient care and experience, helping to drive better health outcomes for the diverse communities it serves. Examples of these efforts, include:

  • Enhanced Care Experience – By leveraging generative AI tools through our collaborations with Abridge and Epic, we’re reducing administrative tasks for doctors and care teams, allowing for more focused face-to-face time between clinicians and their patients and increasing access to care.
  • Emerging Technologies – Sutter is committed to the thoughtful integration of emerging technologies like cutting-edge radiation therapy with LINACs (linear accelerators) for more precise and safer oncology care, and AI-powered imaging for cancer and stroke that aids early screenings and rapid diagnoses.
  • Advancing Health Equity – In 2023, Sutter launched the nation’s first Doctor of Nursing Practice Fellowship, which aims to reduce health disparities by developing the next generation of health equity-focused nurses.

“We know that patient outcomes and patient experience go hand in hand,” said Dr. William Isenberg, Sutter Health’s Chief Medical & Quality Officer. “Our teams are committed to improving our patients’ experience across all care settings, while delivering high quality, equitable and safe care.”

Earlier this year Premier Inc. and Fortune magazine named Sutter Davis Hospital one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals for 2024. Sutter Davis was the only California facility to be named in the “Small Community Hospitals” category and one of only three California hospitals to be included on the Top 100 Hospitals list.
