Growing numbers of healthcare systems recognize that wellness goes beyond what conditions you have or diagnoses you receive. Healthcare needs to account for who you are as well—your experiences, the social drivers surrounding your circumstances and your preferences. All these factors can help lead to improved quality and healthier lives in the long term.

One institution that recognizes those efforts is the Human Rights Campaign. Its Healthcare Equality Index is considered nation’s foremost benchmarking survey of healthcare facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees.

Sutter Health is one healthcare system that has 19 facilities recognized as “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leaders” by the Human Rights Campaign for 2022-2023.

“Sutter has the unique privilege of serving one of the most diverse patient populations in the country, so it’s particularly important we consistently demonstrate a tangible commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion internally and externally,” said Warner L. Thomas, president and CEO of Sutter Health. “It’s not only the right way to operate, but it’s essential for building trust and partnerships across our teams and with the communities we serve in addition to providing patients with high-quality, culturally competent care.”

Check out some of the efforts Sutter has in places across its system to support LGBTQ+ inclusive healthcare.
