Year after year, Sutter Health expands its graduate medical education programs, attracting the best-in-class resident physicians who train in a variety of locations and medical specialties across Sutter’s California footprint. Earlier this week, a new class of resident physicians gathered in Fairfield, Calif. to spend time getting to know one another, learning about Sutter Health and networking with senior Sutter leaders.

The new residents met Dr. Dineen Greer, vice president and designated institutional official, Dr. Lindsay Mazotti, chief medical officer of medical education and science, Leon Clark, vice president and chief academic affairs officer, and other leaders and physicians who are excited to see Sutter’s bright future be realized with the 185 new resident physicians who matched this year to residency programs at Sutter Health.

As part of its Destination 2030 strategy, Sutter Health’s aims to be the most comprehensive, integrated and connected health system.

“Residents play a key role in positioning our system as a top place to practice medicine, conduct research, learn and receive care,” said Dr. Greer.

“Our GME programs are ever-growing, fostering a culture of learning, curiosity, innovation and collaboration,” said Dr. Mazotti. “This exceptional class of learners will be mentored in dynamic training pathways, equipped with knowledge and skills to help address ongoing physician shortages and broaden access to care for patients.”

This year, Sutter filled 100% of its residency and fellowship program openings, increasing the number of new resident and fellow physicians joining Sutter Health by 36.5% over the previous year.

Close to 400 residents and fellows now train across Sutter Health’s 30 accredited GME programs. Sutter’s bold plan to attract and retain top clinical talent by growing GME began in 2022, and by 2030, the system will have trained nearly a 1,000 residents and fellows across its integrated, community-based divisions.
